Apple Filling
• 4½ cups chopped apples
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 2 teaspoons lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Crust & Topping
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
• ½ cup sugar
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch square ovenproof pan.
- Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples, then chop into small pieces. Place in a medium bowl and toss with lemon juice, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
- Make the crust and topping: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, cinnamon, and sugar. Add the cold butter and cut it into the flour mixture using two forks or a pastry blender until crumbly.
- Assemble: Press two-thirds of the crumb mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Spread the apple mixture over the crust, then sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Cool completely before cutting into 16 bars and serving.
