Tips for Eating Locally This Winter

Seasonal food is fresh, tasty and nutritious, but may not be available year-round.  Seasonal fruits and vegetables produced on local farms are often fresher and conserve energy because they do not require long distances for transport.  Some tips to eating locally include:

Learn what locally grown food is available. Seasonal food guides provide you with what is available seasonally.  Click on the button below or visit https://www.seasonalfoodguide.org/.

Find a winter farmers’ market near you.  Although most farmers’ markets are open in the summer and fall, several markets in the Greater Capital Region operate during the winter.

Join a winter CSA. Some Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) have shares available during the winter and sign-ups for summer/fall CSAs often begin in January.   To find CSAs in the Hudson Valley, visit  https://www.hudsonvalleycsa.org/.

Find local non-produce food near you.  Winter provides a great opportunity to purchase dairy, meat and eggs from farmers who have products available all year.
