Farming and Our Food Supply
Our food supply starts with the farmers - without them food manufacturing and distribution as well as restaurants and grocery stores would not exist. All of the people who make it possible to get food from the farm to the grocery stores are integral to the food system. These include farmers as well as the workers in food manufacturing, food service and food distribution. Over 43 million jobs across the United States are tied to food and agriculture. In New York State, 1.9 million jobs are in the food and agriculture industries.
This has been a challenging year for many farmers due to the increased costs of growing crops and raising animals. In addition, many areas of the region experienced a drought after crops were planted resulting in reduced yields. Farmers rely on stored crops to feed their animals during the winter months. With a reduction in yields, they will either have to reduce the number of animals in their herds or purchase more feed. This is just one of the many challenges farmers face every day.
