Enjoy Locally Grown at Winter Farmers' Markets in the Capital Region
Although the growing season has ended and farmers have made their final harvest, consumers can still find locally grown products at Capital Region farmers' markets. The markets head indoors during the winter months, but continue to provide customers with an array of products grown and made locally.
Customers can find storage fruits and vegetables like apples, onions and carrots as well as lettuces and greens farmers grow in high tunnels. Farmers in the Northeast grow cold season crops in high tunnels during the winter months to extend their growing season. High tunnels aid fruit and vegetable farmers by extending the cropping season, providing protection from the weather and allowing for a more stable production system.
Winter harvest crops include arugula, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, kale, collard greens, carrots, leeks, onions and turnips. Many of these crops are available at winter farmers’ markets throughout the Capital Region. Farmers’ markets open during the winter months include the following:
- Saratoga Farmers’ Market, Lincoln Bath’s building, Saratoga State Park, 65 South Broadway, Saratoga Springs. Open Saturdays 9am – 1pm.
- Schenectady Greenmarket, Proctor’s, 432 State St., Schenectady. Open Sundays 10am-2pm.
- Troy Farmers’ Market, Troy Atrium, 49 4th St., Troy. Open Saturdays 9am-2pm.
- Empire State Plaza Farmers’ Market, Empire State Plaza, Albany. Open Wednesdays 10am-2pm.
Produce is also available through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Check with your local CSAs to determine if they offer winter shares. If they do, plan on receiving a variety of storage vegetables that are great for making roasted dishes and soups. Regardless of where you purchase local produce, the benefit of supporting your local farmers is worth the extra effort of eating seasonally!
